Jonathan Barry is an artist who specializes in painting famous scenes from literature, and is known for his paintings from such classics as Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Wind In the Willows, Sherlock Holmes, and many other classic novels. In his career he has painted over 200 famous scenes from literature.His paintings have sold wordwide, including at Sotheby’s of New Bond Street in London, where nine of his paintings have sold at the famous auction house, since 2004. He is the only living Irish illustrator to have sold his paintings at Sotheby’s headquarters on New Bond Street.
His paintings have appeared in over 100 national and international newspapers, including The London Times, and The Wall Street Journal. His artwork has also appeared on BBC1, BBC 2, and BBC 4 television. Several of the books he has illustrated have appeared in Coronation Street, and Eastenders, including the Coronation Street movie, Romanian Journey in 2009.
He is also a professional full-time book illustrator, and has illustrated over 50 books, including for Penguin Putnam Books, and Simon & Schuster in the U.S. and The Wordsworth Classics in the UK. Since 2007 he has illustrated twenty of the Wordsworth Classics, including all seven of their Sherlock Holmes titles, to be published in 2010 with new covers by the artist.
Other Wordsworth Classics he has illustrated include, Dracula, Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, Great Expectations, Moby Dick, and many more. He works and lives in Ireland.
